The building at 1501 Grand Ave in Des Moines has been home to the blues for many, many years. Most famously known for being the home of the legendary Blues on Grand, boasting blues 6 nights a week, this building has also housed the Gas Lamp (current), Vicki's Pour House, the Grand, the Republic on Grand and others.
But its long-standing history as a music venue is about to end. In July the Gas Lamp will close its doors for good. Sadly, July 7th will be the final Work Release featuring Bob Pace show in this location.
Our group's goal is to fund three projects to keep the spirit of this space alive:
1. A fully-produced documentary (video) of the final Work Release Blues show at the location featuring interviews and commentary to remember this building's legacy with the blues. We are working with Jon Locker of Jabbermouth Media who will be doing the video production,
2. An industrial, commercial plaque to be placed on-site to commemorate this location's 50+ year history with the blues,
3. A historical website to house content, photos, and videos so musicians and fans alike can remember the great music that was played in the building.
The "Preserving The Blues at 1501 Grand" Committee is: Granville Williams, Sue Jensen, Diane Seggerda, Holly and Gene Peterson, Kim Brittain, Rachel Filzer, Mark Wuilleumier, Tom Buckmiller, Sheila and Greg Robinson.
Additionally, we want to thank the Board Members of the Central Iowa Blues Society for their support.
