NYA is Home
Since 1998, Northern Youth Abroad (NYA) has supported youth from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories as they grow, succeed and lead in their communities. We started with 10 youth in our first year. Today, we serve more than 1,000 Northern youth each year.
Wherever we’ve gathered, NYA has always felt like home. Now we have the chance to put down roots.
Where this dream began
For 15 years, our Orientation and Re-Orientation were held at a camp east of Ottawa. It had a tiny kitchen and no electricity in the sleeping areas. But that’s not what Participants, volunteers and staff remember. They remember the bond they felt with that place, with the land and with each other.
That feeling is what we want to build, permanently.
What a home makes possible
- A home base for Northern students. A place for youth who come to Ottawa for school to study, get tutoring or share a meal.
- A place to gather. Space to host Participants and come together with partners and community.
- Land to nurture. Gardens where food and medicine can grow, and a quiet place to step away.
- Room to grow. A permanent base for our team to keep doing what we do best, for years to come.
- Space to share. We will offer meeting and retreat space on a sliding scale to Northern organizations and our neighbours, so the home helps support itself for years to come.
Why now
This is a rare opportunity to buy a property in Ottawa that can serve NYA, the North and our neighbours.
Every gift moves us closer, whether it’s $25 or $25,000.
