As many of you know Makayla has lived a life with epilepsy since she was 3 years old. She was able to live a pretty normal life up until high school when her life took a turn for the worst. She started having grand mals pretty often along with getting diagnosed with lymes disease. She began declining mentally, physically, and cognitively. Makayla is 26 years old and is not able to live a normal life that every other 26 year old gets to live. It breaks our hearts seeing the suffering that she has gone through and all that she has put up with. She is such an inspiration with her faith in God. She is full of joy and hasn't given up one second. She continues to seek and honor Him in all she does no matter how bad her circumstances are.
After progressively getting worse these last few years, we decided to give medication another try along with VNS implant. For the first time in too long Makayla has hope! She went from 19 seizures a month with minimal ability to even function or talk to only 2 seizures a month with no debilitating side effects! We are seeing progression for the first time since she was an early teen. We are so excited and praising God for these hopeful answers!
With Makayla being 26 years old and wanting a life of independence and a little bit of normalcy we found an amazing opportunity to get her a service dog. We are taking the route of buying our own puppy from a recommended breeder so Makayla can be a part of the training process. We are able to get the cost cut in half along with the dog getting to bond with Makayla and get to know her from early on. We will be making trips to Tucson once a month for the next year and then training every day at home with the puppy so Makayla can have a certified seizure dog. With the training we will be taking the dog to, it will be able to sense and give warning of a seizure coming on up to 45 minutes in advance. Having this dog will help allow her to have some independence and do some things on her own for the first time as an adult.
The number one thing we ask for and have always asked for is for prayer. Please pray that God continues to heal Makayla and that this may be the answer we have waited for 21 years for. Please pray that we will trust God no matter what the outcome is. Please pray for Makayla that she will get to live a normal and healthy life that she deserves!
We are SO grateful for all of the prayer and support that we have gotten over the years. Asking for help isn't something that comes easy for us but when it is for Makayla we are willing to do anything to help her including traveling all over the US for various treatments and therapies.
We are asking that if God puts it on your heart to help financially that you would consider it. With being able to get the costs cut in half it is still going to cost $10,000 for the puppy and initial training. Most of all we ask for prayer but if giving is something you are able to do as well we appreciate it so much!
