Eswatini Nursing Abroad

Donation protected
Hello!

I am so excited to share that I’ve been one of twelve University of Iowa nursing students chosen to participate in a two-week nursing experience in Eswatini, a country in Southern Africa, this coming Spring of 2023! This is an experiential learning program that will allow me to develop my skills in nursing while meeting the needs of the people in the community. While this is a fantastic opportunity, it also comes at a cost beyond my tuition, so I am asking for any support to provide me the opportunity to take advantage of this program.

This trip is through our Public Health course and provides an incredibly unique opportunity for me to see public health beyond Iowa and the United States. Taking part in this opportunity will provide more than clinical education; it will prepare me to be a more holistic nurse, bringing these lessons with me to my future patients and influencing my future care. I can’t wait to embark on this journey and would so appreciate any financial help to get there!

Here is a short breakdown of what we will be doing during our time in Africa.
  • Apply the principles of public health combined with nursing knowledge and skills
  • Address health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and nursing management of infectious diseases and chronic health conditions
  • Perform nursing activities that focus on the improvement of health outcomes at the individual, family, community, and global levels within the context of population-focused practice.
  • Actively engage in community assessment, community planning, and community action processes in partnership with the faith community and public health nurses in the Kingdom of Eswatini
  • Gain an understanding of the similarities and differences in a country and region very different from Johnson County, Iowa, and have the potential to discover the many community assets and population strengths that exist despite poverty, low literacy, and chronic health conditions such as HIV/AIDS/TB and the health consequences of hunger and water shortages
  • Witness how the health of the Swazi people is affected by the political climate, socioeconomic conditions, and cultural factors of their geographic region.

Your funding would go towards:
  • International travel expenses
  • Fees towards lodging, food, and ground transportation
  • Study abroad fee

I truly appreciate every one of you in helping me get to Eswatini. Thank you so much for your time and generosity!
