The Makuyu Education Initiative (MEI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operating in the village of Makuyu, Kenya with the mission statement of providing underprivileged children with an opportunity to escape the vicious cycle of poverty by providing a head start in education, fighting malnutrition and overcoming other obstacles that can deter them from reaching their full potential.
For years we've rented our place and worked under the whims of a landlady who constantly threatened to evict us. About a year ago, after many obstacles, we finally managed to get our own place and build a few classrooms, a volunteer room, a room for our beloved security guard Francis, and a store room.
Unfortunately, we had to stop construction prematurely because we ran out of funds. With volunteers finally starting to come back and our pre-school school growing, we are hoping to make one last push to raise $5000 more to finish the construction of an extra classroom, one more volunteer room, and one more caretaker room.
We are so close! If you have traveled to Makuyu, you know that our project is an important part of the community and has helped many people, especially children, many of whom are now starting secondary school and starting to pursue their dreams. Please consider helping us reach this reasonable goal before the rains come!
