Total funds raised as of January 2020: over $89,000.00

Who We Are
NUBC has successfully raised over $89,000.00 as of January 31 2020.
Neighbors United Below Canal (NUBC) represents thousands of residents and small businesses whose lives are centered in Lower Manhattan.  We are DIRECTLY impacted by Mayor De Blasio and NYC Council Speaker Johnson's $11+ billion plan to build 4 new jails, including a 35+ story jail in the heart of Chinatown, Tribeca and Little Italy at 124-125 White Street.

Where we stand

As NUBC is engaged and organizing around opposing any new jails based on reasons as specified herein , we also feel obliged to express our commitment to be guided by the humane aspects of incarceration, even to the extent that either Riker’s Island undergo radical reform or be closed.

Serious dialogue about the costs of incarceration versus less costly alternatives, such as prevention, education, community efforts, and drug treatment must ensue. There are victims of crimes. Efforts to be more responsive to their concerns must be part of the dialogue. As well, that dialogue must not be indifferent to nor give up on those who violate the law. Both the most wounded victim and the most callous criminal retain their humanity.

5 Facts You Should Know:

The jail will be as tall as The Statue of Liberty standing 300 ft. at 124-125 White Street. It is Experimental, Untested and UnSafe.
Environmental Death Sentence.  Demolition and construction - 10+ years of particle matter, noise pollution, asbestos in our neighborhoods.  Thousands of vulnerable residents, including seniors and children.   Our air quality is already compromised from the effects of 9/11.

More than Our Fair Share.   Chinatown, Tribeca and Little Italy now houses the largest incarceration infrastructure in the entire City - 3 jails, 34% of Manhattan’s detainees.  The current Manhattan Detention Complex has 800+ beds.   Mayor De Blasio and Speaker Johnson want to add another 700+ beds, and build this Complex to 4X in height, and over 3X in size.

NOT Real Criminal Justice Reform.  Building skyscraper jails at the cost of $11+ billion does NOT end mass incarceration.  Investing in communities, healthcare, education, food security, and affordable housing does.  PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO GO TO JAIL TO GET THE SERVICES THEY NEED.

ILLEGAL Process. Mayor De Blasio, Speaker Johnson, and other elected officials are ramrodding this Plan through, using deception, half-truths, and false promises. We CANNOT silently stand by while elected officials spend $11+ billion of the public’s money, while endangering  our families.

Our Ask:

PLEASE DONATE NOW TO FUND OUR LAWSUIT TO FIGHT THIS JAIL*:  The City Council has voted "YES" on October 17, 2019 to approve this Mega-Jails Plan.   Once it is approved, our lawsuit will be our last chance to fight against this Plan.   We have little time to file after approval, or we lose our chance.   The law says that we must file our law suit within 4 months of the council vote, every minute counts!

ANY AMOUNT WILL HELP:  100% of your contributions will be used to fund the legal fees for this lawsuit.   NUBC’s fiscal sponsor is Chinese American Citizens Alliance of Greater New York (CACGNY), a non-profit, 501(c)(8) organization.   Contributions to NUBC are not tax-deductible.   If you prefer to issue a check, contact us at [email redacted]. we do not accept cash donations and we only receive checks by mailing them to us at NUBC, 6 Doyers St. , PO BOX 130034, NYC NY 10013 - thank you
