#TeamBrownsville: Help Asylum Seekers

Donation protected
My name is Sergio Cordova and I’m a resident of Brownsville, Texas. One evening in July 2018, a group of friends and I crossed the Gateway International Bridge with a mission to take food and supplies to the asylum seekers that were living there. That was the first time the words “Team Brownsville” were used. We were just a small group of friends, trying to do the right thing and help the people that had no home, no country, no belongings, nothing. We didn’t realize that day how our lives would change and how #TeamBrownsville would evolve.

Today, #TeamBrownsville has two primary missions. The first is to help the asylum seekers who are left at the bus station, most with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Our volunteers assist by serving meals and distributing needed supplies such as diapers, wipes, sanitary napkins, shoelaces, and belts, coloring books, crayons, and soft toys and dolls for the children. Volunteers provide maps and assist in planning out their journeys, connecting them with family members, legal support, and more when possible. The volunteer presence at the bus station is critical in helping these individuals through an often traumatic experience.

The second mission is to assist the people living at the Gateway International Bridge while they wait for the chance to legally cross the border and seek asylum. Team Brownsville volunteers provide daily breakfast and dinner to about 500 people. The volunteers assist by bringing clothing, tents, mats, shoes, toiletries and other items as needed. Legal advice and medical care are provided when volunteer lawyers and doctors are available to join.

These simple actions and interactions make these folks so happy. When they are hungry, we give them cereal. When the children are scared, coloring books make them smile. When they are dirty, we give them clean clothing and shoelaces. When they are alone, we give them compassion and love.

Over the last year, #TeamBrownsville has grown to include local folks, friends that join us from out of town, and online support from people around the globe. Some join to help us physically and others help us by providing donations and funding. We are excited to share that we are now an officially certified 501(c)3 non-profit organization. #TeamBrownsville will use donations made to this campaign to purchase food, supplies, and other necessities for our brothers and sisters need.

We thank you for your support and ask that you help us continue to spread the word. Bendiciones!
