The City and County of Santa Cruz are not taking care of the needs of the homeless here in our community as well as they should be.
(Where has all the money for homelessness gone? We all want to know!)
Currently Santa Cruz is one of the areas that will go down in history for not helping its most vulnerable residents during this covid-19 pandemic. Even going as far as City Council passing an anti camping ordinance with a 5-2 vote on 3/9/2021 (known as the temporary outdoor living ordinance aka TOLO) that will target and criminalize our most vulnerable and disabled community members for just trying to exist nearly anywhere in town. This will likely go into play in the next 30 days but it's up to the City.
The Santa Cruz Chapter of the California Homeless Union is being hammered with requests of needs of all different types from small to large.
We are currently holding onto a successful TRO to help the San Lorenzo Park encampment residents, as the City was going to disperse them against CDC guidelines. Some of our efforts include Litigation, and Organization but we try to fill a need wherever it may be. It could be legal expenses, hotel fee's, homeless person's vehicle registration, we provide food and survival gear including blankets, tents and sleeping bags when available (Some of this can feel like a wasted effort when the City or SCPD throws people's survival gear right in the trash, but we must continue) At times my RV has been a mobile warming center or I get a call for someone needing a blanket and no where else is available. This kind of thing is common in our community and donations give us the resources to help people.
Any donations will go towards meeting the needs mentioned above, we try to show receipts, and photos of individuals being helped out if they are okay with that, you can follow our efforts and see pics at Santa Cruz County Homeless Advocates/Santa Cruz Homeless Union on Facebook.
We can do this! Thank you so very much.
