There is just one 15 km (9.3mi) road in and when it is cut off, so is the power and communication, and we must look after ourselves and our native wildlife.
Over the years we have seen large bushfires before and thought we were well prepared however, we were overrun by these fires in the last week.
The impact of these fires showed up some gaps so we need to be better prepared.
We need to have better equipment to cope with the event and then better resources and systems for the short and long term recovery afterwards.
We want to create a critical response kit that will enable power and communications independent of the usual networks to better protect and inform not just the 700-odd residents but the 5000+ tourists who were trapped with us at the time.
We want to document what worked and didn't, resolve issues, build resources and systems and create a template for other small communities like us to build our resilience and self-reliance.
Donation money doesn't tend to filter down to small communities like ours - we are hoping you would like to help us directly - we will report everything we spend and do through our website rhva.org.au
Thank you for your help and good thoughts.
P.S. Please share with your friends, we are hoping to raise $75,000 towards the cost of our objectives.
