Community fridges are food pantries, often housed outside of public places, which allow 24/7 access to fresh food, canned goods, and home-cooked meals. Operating under a “take what you need, leave what you can” principle, these fridges are entirely community-run and are operated by volunteers and neighbors. Community fridges also partner with local businesses and food rescues to keep a steady supply of food and prepared meals available.
There are more than two dozen community fridges around Philadelphia, which act as a small but mighty effort in combating the food insecurity faced by 240,000 residents. However, right now there are none readily available in Northeast Philadelphia. We believe everyone has the right to accessible food.
Northeast Community Fridge will be located outside of the Memorial Presbyterian Church of Fox Chase at 7902 Oxford Ave.
We are currently fundraising for building costs, a fridge, and future grocery trips and maintenance.
