Notting Hill Carnival Billboard takeover!
Donation protected
Last year I asked my online audience 'Is NHC losing it's historical significance?' 81% percent answered 'yes'. This year, I refuse to be having the same conversations ~ it's time for ACTION!
So, in January 2025, I secured the billboard at the top of Ladbroke Grove (by the Sainsbury's roundabout). If you are thinking already!? It may surprise you to know that the neighbouring billboard was secured in November 2024 for August 2025!
To secure this billboard for two weeks cost £2,000. I borrowed the amount from my mum! ;-) - Thanks Margie!
On the Billboard, It will display a quote from Darcus Howe (on the NHC website) 'if it wasn't for the Notting Hill riots and the death of Kelso Cochrane carnival wouldn't have happened' This will be accompanied with iconography of Kelso Cochrane (permission pending) and the Notting Hill race riots (see example/mock-up).
As the billboard will be up for the designated two week slot (11th August - 26th August) I will use the opportunity to film content, asking locals walking by if they know who the gentleman pictured is? and do they know the NHC origin story? This content will help to get additional eyes on the billboard and the important history. This footage will then be used to propel a petition to get NHC history taught in schools.
Without concluding, depending on how this gofundme goes, I also have plans to upscale with a bus shelter take over and even (in my 3 year plan) a Westfield's White City Billboard takeover which costs £15K-20K. As we grow, I'll have more scope to include other founding fathers and important NHC facts.
The theme of UK Black History month is 'reclaiming narratives'.
If you would like to 'reclaim the narrative' of Notting Hill Carnival donate what you can!
Ps: I'm hoping all donors can meet outside the billboard, date tbc.
We got work to do Kayne!
Ps: I do not benefit financially from this, I will be covering additional costs of designing, my time and energy, etc. This is ALL in honour of my British-Caribbean history/culture and for my Granny Madame!
