Non Profit Masks for Frontline Workers

Donation protected
We are making masks to donate to frontline workers dealing with Covid-19  in the UK.

I have designed a simple-to-make original pattern and have sourced a large amount of 100% Nonwoven Spunbond Polyproylene - the fluid resistant, breathable fabric normally used to make surgical masks.   Although not a medical-grade N95 or P3, my design fits similarly closely to the face with no gaps (surgical masks are normally not designed to be air-tight, they’re only designed to protect the wearer from splashes).  Our masks feature a bendable wire nose piece that can be formed to the bridge of your nose and elastic to stretch comfortably around the back of your neck and head.   Frontline carers can wear these masks over their officially-issued respirators to help them to last longer.  Civilians can wear them as they are when they go out for groceries or their daily exercise.

We would like to make a massive amount of these to donate to our healthcare workers.  Using our wholesale contacts, we are buying materials at the most reasonable prices, but it is still a considerable outlay.   We are aiming to make 20,000 masks to begin with, but if this project is successful, we can make many times more.

There are a few ways that you can help.

1.  On our website today, you can buy 3 masks  for £40 including shipping in the UK.  100% of the proceeds will be used for our non-profit mask-making project. Each purchase will cover the materials and logistical costs of EIGHTY volunteer-made masks to be donated to frontline workers.

2.  Are you a fashion student, sewer or craftsperson, have access to a sewing machine, and fancy helping out? Please send us your name, address and phone number on Instagram @edelinelee or via email to [email redacted].  We can ship to you a mask-making kit to assemble 50 masks in your home.  Post the finished masks back within one week, and we will be distributing them to hospitals en masse.  If you are from an organisation in need of masks - please email us as well.

3.  If you'd like to make a donation to help us cover the material and logistical costs of this project (all of our labour is being donated for free), please gofundme here!   Should we exceed our target or there remains money left over, we will donate this to a suitable charity afterwards.

4.  If you fancy making a mask for yourself, please look at our Instagram and website for a video tutorial and a free downloadable pattern.  Print it out onto A4 paper, and you can try making your own using two layers of cotton.

Everyone that is working on this project is donating their time.  The photographs on our website have been shot in isolation at home by a husband and wife team: Dima and Ariel Hohlov, and was styled via Zoom by Katie Felstead.  The materials have been cut and prepared in Edeline and her studio assistant's households, and the masks have been stitched by volunteers in their homes.  Tom Burke has edited the videos from his isolated cabin in Cornwall.

Canadian-British Edeline Lee is a fashion designer.  Her work has been worn by stars including Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Cynthia Nixon, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Swift, Ciara, Amy Fine Collins, Ellie Goulding and Solange Knowles.  Spring Summer 2016 was her debut season on the official London Fashion Week schedule of the British Fashion Council.  All Edeline Lee pieces are made by hand in England.
