On March 6, 2014, Josh Shapiro, Leslie Richards, and Bruce Castor adjourned from a regular Montgomery County Commissioners meeting and finalized the sale of ~180 acres of open space in Upper Providence Township behind closed doors.
They did this over the vocal and protracted objections of Upper Providence Township and its residents.
The unprecedented sale of open space opened the door for development on this pristine acreage in our community which had heretofore been designated as Open Space Conservation in County and Township documents.
On January 19, 2021, the buyer, Scott Rifkin, presented the inevitable development plans we feared in a public meeting. The plan included various amenities, an inn, retail space, office space, and approximately 500 to 600 new residential units on 180 acres, at least half of which will be apartments. Current zoning is Open Space Conservation with an Institutional overlay, which allows for approximately 10% of the space to be developed as an Institutional use (school, hospital, CCRC, church, governmental, etc.). The development plans presented on January 19 will require a major zoning change for the property.
The only governmental body with the power to change the zoning on this property is the Upper Providence Board of Supervisors: Bill Starling, Chairman, Laurie Higgins, Vice Chairman, Helene Calci, John Pearson, and Al Vagnozzi.
Join us to stop this irresponsible development and work for a plan that respects the history of the property and maintains the character of the neighborhood. Your donation will fund our various efforts (including yard signs, legal counsel, web site, mailers, etc. ) for raising awareness and influencing the five Upper Providence Supervisors to stand with their community--and NOT THE DEVELOPER--- in opposition to a zoning change on this property.
We lost this property seven years ago when our objections to the sale were ignored by the Montgomery County Commissioners. Please help us to make sure our Upper Providence Township Supervisors do not ignore our wishes today.
