In April 2019, a handful of property owners were notified of a hearing for a special use permit near their property for an industrial sandpit operation for 220+ acres for 20+ years with the potential of expansion. This property is located at 166th & Lenape Road, just south of the railroad track heading into De Soto. The proposal is to mine the sand which will create a large "lake" for the property owners personal use at the end of the project. The sand will be trucked on our rural county roads, which are not designed for heavy truck traffic. This will create congestion and hazardous driving conditions for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, busloads of school-kids and residents and commuters heading to and from work.
Other major concerns:
- Constant noise
- Light Pollution
- potential water pollution to residents and near by cities that pull water from wells in the river bottom
- Blowing sand and dust
- Diesel exhaust and fumes
- Spoil the experience for golfers at Burning Tree Golf Club and diminish the quality of life for neighboring farms and residential homes
- Endangering the nearby bald eagle nesting and foraging areas along the Kaw River
- Kill off residential growth and send property values plummeting
- There are alternative sites that are better suited for this type of operation
- Loss of agricultural land forever.....NO Farms = NO Food!
