I’m Ryan Thoresen Carson, a community organizer and policy analyst from Brooklyn, NY by way of Boston.
I’m raising funds for NO OD NY—a grassroots organization that advocates for the creation of stigma-free Safe Injection Facilities where people who use opioids can access life-saving medical care, connect to social workers and resources within their communities, and be treated with respect.
This July, I and a team of activists will walk more than 350 miles across New York state in order to pressure Governor Andrew Cuomo to authorize Safe Injection Facilities in New York state.
Along the way, we’ll host town halls and other public events in order to foster dialogue about the opioid epidemic and raise awareness about the life-saving potential of Safe Injection Facilities. We’ll stop in cities across the state that have been hard hit by the opioid epidemic, connecting with New Yorkers whose lives have been forever changed by this crisis.
As part of our campaign, we’re undertaking a massive story banking project so that people impacted by the opioid epidemic can share their experiences, find community, and join us in calling for change.
Our vision is to end opioid overdose deaths. To that end, your donation will support:
◉ Supplies for our walk, such as tents, first-aid kits, and food
◉ Film and audio equipment for story banking
◉ Pamphlets, flyers, and educational materials
◉ Compensation and transportation for staff
◉ Web hosting for our website
◉ Local listings for our public events
We’re launching our walk from the steps of New York City Hall on July 1. From there, we’ll make stops in New Paltz, Albany, Troy, Binghamton, Ithaca, Rochester, and Buffalo.
I’m passionate about Safe Injection Facilities because I’ve seen family members become addicted to opioids prescribed for pain caused by their occupations. I’ve lost friends and family to the opioid epidemic, including my best friend, who died of a heroin overdose in 2016.
My story is unfortunately common. For many, the opioid overdose hits close to home. According to the New York City Department of Health, every six hours, someone dies of a drug overdose in New York City. More New Yorkers die of drug overdoses than homicides, suicides, and motor vehicle crashes combined. According to the CDC, more than 81,000 people across the nation died in 2020 from drug overdoses—the highest number of overdose deaths on record for a single year.
This crisis isn’t going away on its own. It’s time to focus on new strategies to fight back, including Safe Injection Facilities.
