I'm Aaron, and I own The Nitecap—a 50-seat comedy room in Los Angeles. I started this place in 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic, because LA needed a real room for comics to get good in front of real people—not another open mic, an actual stage. Since then, The Nitecap has lived through a writer's strike, last year's fires, a personal flood of the building, and the cost of living going up. Through all of it, I've been the only person running it: booking every show, bartending because I can't afford a bartender, doing the books, all of it. There's a handful of comics that help out with the shows, but I'm a one-man team. If you don't know the math of a small venue: we can't sell alcohol, which means the thing that actually keeps most rooms this size alive isn't even on the table for us. Just rent, in this city, in this economy, eats most of what comes in before a single ticket gets sold. It's worked. People show up. Comics grow here. But "it's working" and "it's sustainable" have not been the same sentence for a while now.

In 2023, a pipe burst in the building above us and flooded the venue. We were down most of that year—18 shows instead of a full season, no insurance check ever came to cover it. I rebuilt it myself because the alternative was just closing, and I wasn't ready to do that. 2024 was actually good. We found our footing again. But that flood didn't just cost us a year of shows. It put us a year behind, and a one-man operation with a 50-seat room and no bar to lean on doesn't have a lot of room to ever fully catch back up. That debt's been sitting underneath everything since, quietly, and it's caught up with me now—rent and overhead moving faster than I can outrun them alone.

I'm not asking anyone to save a business forever. I'm asking for help getting through this one thing. What this place has built over the years isn't something I can put a price on, but I can tell you what it would mean if it disappeared: a room full of people who found something here they couldn't find anywhere else in this city would just lose it. Comics who grow on this stage would have one less place to do that. And I'd have to live with knowing I couldn't get it across the finish line, after everything it took to get this far.
