When Nilam was eight, she would climb the hills behind her grandmother’s house in Eastern Nepal—not to see the view, but to feel free. Up there, away from the taunts, away from the questions, she could breathe. No one asked her why her voice was soft, why she didn’t act like a “boy,” or why she cried too easily. Up there, she wasn’t hiding—she was becoming.

As she grew older, the world pushed harder. Teachers refused to say her name. Relatives pretended she didn’t exist. She survived violence not just from others, but from the loneliness of invisibility. Still, she climbed.

She climbed out of silence.

She climbed through pain.

She climbed into the light.

Today, Nilam Poudel stands not just as a transgender woman—but as a leader, a storyteller, a dreamer. And in Spring 2026, she will take that dream to the highest point on Earth: Mount Everest.

This climb is not just hers. It’s for every trans child who whispered their name in secret. For every queer teen who never saw themselves in the stories of courage. For every young person told that their identity was too heavy to carry to the top.
