Nicole's Rebuilding Effort in Nepal

Hi! For those of you who know me personally, you know that the past year has been one of personal growth and some major soul searching.   That search has resulted in my decision to spend more of my time helping others and to truly make an impact in underserved communities.  Recently, I was presented with an opportunity to help those in desperate need.  On February 15th, I will be one of six volunteers from the US who will travel to Nepal and climb to the remote village of Bigu to help rebuild the village's central hub, a Buddhist nunnery that was destroyed in the devastating earthquakes of 2015. 

The Himalayan Guge Organization (HGO) is a Non-Governmental Organization whose projects are  wholly non-profit and non-political.  Their priority is creating medical clinics for Tibetan refugees in remote villages who otherwise would have limited to no access.  Since the lives of these deeply religious people revolve around monasteries and nunneries,  HGO will establish medical clinics at several Buddhist sites.  The Tashi Chime Gatsal Nunnery, where I will be traveling, is not only a spiritual hub but  is also home to 70 nuns from very young girls to elderly women.  Many of these girls are placed here for safety since they may otherwise be subjected to human trafficking, which is unfortunately common in Nepal. 

Delivering these vital services has been near impossible since the earthquakes in 2015 destroyed nearly all of the buildings.  Even today and through the winter, the nuns continue to live in temporary shelters while rebuilding efforts continue.  I will be part of a small team setting out to aid the HGO in their efforts to rebuild the nunnery and help restore their ability to be of service to those in need.
