Hello Neighbors!
There's a lot going on right now, between the government shutdown, the loss of SNAP benefits, rising foods costs due to tariffs, and a potential teacher's strike in Minneapolis. It can be hard to know how to make an impact, and as your neighborhood market, we can help by turning community donations directly into groceries for folks in need, at least through the end of the year, and longer if necessary.
We will provide bags of groceries of roughly $25-$30 cost to us (no markup) and distribute them to folks who live within the neighborhood and reach out to us. We will start with the basics - bread, milk, eggs, butter, ground meat, pasta, fruit & veg, and evolve as we understand community needs better and as the holidays approach.
To be honest, we're not sure what the demand level will be and how much it will cost to sustain, but we have to give it a shot. We think this will be more effective than holding a food drive (which would make us some money, but help fewer people) or referring folks to food shelves (including the one we already donate to) that were already overwhelmed with demand prior to the shutdown.
We'll keep you updated as funds are raised and spent - if you contribute in store (tell your cashier you want to give to Neighbors Helping Neighbors) - we'll add it to the total here after each business day.
Thank you all so much!

Some fine print: we are not a nonprofit organization, so money contributed is not tax deductible. It is also important to note that grocery bags will not be restricted to SNAP recipients and we will not require any proof for assistance, as we have recently received correspondence from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service that "offering discounts or services only to SNAP paying customers is a SNAP violation" and could put us at risk of losing the ability to accept SNAP/EBT, so, we won't.
