Niall Ó Tuathail for Dáil - Representing Galway

I never wanted to be a politician. But nine years ago, when Ireland was dealing with a banking collapse and massive cuts to our public services, I decided I had to get involved. I joined an Independent campaign for the Dáil and in two months we came from nowhere to getting him elected to the Dáil. Five years ago, I was part of setting up a new political party, the Social Democrats, that has a new kind of politics at the core – politics of integrity, fairness and competence. Four years ago I ran in the general election, built an incredible team, and came close to winning a seat in Galway in what would have been a major shock for the political system.
I’m still as committed to serving you, Galway, and Ireland as I was nine years ago, and I believe that Galway is up for major change as long as it is credible and competent. Since the election four years ago, I have continued to develop the experience and expertise needed to represent Galway in the Dáil, working on major health reform for the NHS in Scotland and England, and continuing to work on issues on the ground in Galway.
I also have a young family with two kids - David aged 6 and Alice aged 4 and somehow manage the juggling act all families do to balance family, work, and being a part of your community.
I want to be part of a government that supports families and is ambitious and making decisions for our children’s futures - building quality public services, leading the way in climate action and creating loving accepting communities.

Our generation of young families and young people need representation to fix the raw deal we have. My parents’ generation had a clear deal - you got an education or a trade, you worked hard and you could buy a home and start a family on one income in your 20's.
That deal doesn't exist anymore.
Instead what we're left with is young families working two full time jobs and still being crippled by mortgages, huge costs of childcare, transport and health insurance. For young people on normal jobs, they are just trying to live by themselves in their 30s and the thought of owning their own home and raising a family seems like a cruel fantasy.
We can fix the raw deal by investing properly in public services - not just more money but better value for money. Having a decent public health service that means we don’t need to get health insurance for €2,000 per year, having a decent and sustainable bus system so families don’t need to run a second car at €5,000 per year, having affordable quality childcare that isn’t as expensive as a mortgage and having access to affordable and well insulated housing so that people can afford to live by themselves without risk of eviction.
This raw deal can be fixed through the public services. What we are talking about can’t be solved by small changes in how government works – it will only come through the politics of big ideas, big action and getting value for money. I never felt our governments reflected that ambition, or had the capability to make it happen, and I want to be part of making that happen. I’ve spent my career working on getting big ideas, big action and value for money in healthcare and want to use this experience to fix the raw deal for Galway families and young people.
For me to get elected, I need your support. The most important donation anyone can give to the campaign is time and every volunteer is worth their weight in gold to the campaign. If you can’t give time, we also need to raise money to help our volunteers reach voters and tell them about the campaign.
Your donations will allow:
Printing over 2,000 leaflets for €100
Reaching thousands of voters online for €50
Getting coffee and snacks for our canvassing volunteers for €10
