NewRoot (Umoja) Event Honoring Sharon Lindstrom

Our friend Sharon Lindstrom is being honored at NewRoot Learning Institute’s kickoff event for their upcoming 25th anniversary year, next Thursday, June 15. She has served NewRoot (formerly Umoja) for 20+ years!

Sharon is passionate about education and wants to help even the playing field. Students lose >11 million days of instruction every year due to suspensions and expulsions - and a disproportionate number are black and brown students.

NewRoot supports educators who in turn support students, by promoting Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) and Restorative Justice (RJ) practices, which decreases suspensions and increases attendance.

This improves students’ mental health, increases graduation rates, decreases violence, and creates safer communities, both for students and all of us as fellow Chicago citizens.
