My Story (ESPANOL ABAJO!!!!!!) (GANZ UNTEN AUCH AUF DEUTSCH!!)
My name is Sophie and I dedicated the last few years of my life to the conservation of marine wildlife. I grew up loving the ocean and after moving from Australia to the island of Mallorca, my love towards the sea began to grow!
When I was 15, I was given the opportunity to spend my summer as a deckhand on-board the Toftevaag, an ancient Norwegian sailboat that carries out research and marine conservation. After only a week on the ship, I fell in love with the project. Every day I would get to meet amazing new people, learning about marine ecosystems from scientists who have been studying them for over 30 years.
But what really kept me coming back for more, was the crew’s dedication to the mission of saving our oceans, and the knowledge that our seas need to be protected urgently! Today, four years later, I am the skipper of Toftevaag and more passionate than ever before.
But the project needs your help!
I decided to do anything I can to help raise money for this cause that is very close to my heart and is helping to protect my Mediterranean home.
Help me raise funds for a new powerboat
In order for the conservation project to carry on, the Toftevaag and its crew need to obtain a new zodiac (powerboat) for the following season. It's needed to help save turtles caught in fishing nets and release them back into the ocean, as well as getting our scientists and filmmakers and their gear safely in and out of the water, to study whales and dolphins up close, catch floating marine debris and conduct oceanographic studies, among many other things!
The project is now relying on raising enough funds to replace the zodiac by March, in time for the 2020 season, so it can continue to protect endangered species in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Toftevaag sails for a charity organization called Save the Med Foundation, an inspiring team of volunteers, scientists and educators who work hard to protect and regenerate marine life in the Mediterranean Sea.
Through their work, students and citizens can have the once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about dolphins, sea turtles and whales in their natural environment. Not only, the team works extra hard to reduce plastic pollution in our coastlines and in the sea, by working with schools, communities and other NGOs to raise awareness and help citizens become part of the solution. The team is all about involving everyone in the process of conservation, not just the scientists. The ship unites researchers, organisations and policy makers on-board to work together for more successful and collaborative protection of marine wildlife.
It’s in this spirit of collaboration and compassion that I’m reaching out to you all to ask for contributions towards this project! Again, I will be forever grateful for any donations to this cause that means so much to me. You will be helping our planet get one step closer to clean and healthy oceans!

Some examples of the project’s accomplishments:
· This summer, the crew removed over 42 cubic tonnes of plastic, including 132 hazardous ghost fishing artefacts from the sea.
· On-board, the crew uses satellite tags to study sea turtles and uses this information to help protect them
· Over the years, over 4000 citizens from 90 countries contributed to the work of the Toftevaag!
· With the help of Save the Med’s Changemaker school program, 50 ocean loving students from Mallorca were able to spend a week on-board the ship, studying marine science and becoming advocates for the oceans among their peers
· Over the years, the project helped to establish Marine Protected Areas for threatened species around the Balearic Islands

Mi nombre es Sophie y he dedicado los últimos años de mi vida a la conservación de la vida
marina. Crecí amando el océano y después de mudarme de Australia a la isla de Mallorca, ¡mi
amor hacia el mar comenzó a crecer!
Cuando tenía 15 años, tuve la oportunidad de pasar el verano como marinera a bordo del
Toftevaag, un antiguo velero noruego que realiza labores de investigación y conservación marina.
Después de solo una semana en el barco, me enamoré del proyecto. Todos los días conocía a
personas increíbles, aprendiendo sobre los ecosistemas marinos de investigadores que los han
estado estudiando durante más de 30 años.
Pero lo que realmente me hizo volver fue la dedicación de la tripulación en su misión de salvar

Ayúdame a recaudar fondos para una nueva lancha motora
Para que el proyecto de conservación continúe, el Toftevaag y su tripulación necesitan obtener
una nueva embarcación (semirrigida) para la próxima temporada. La embarcación es necesaria,
por ejemplo, para liberar a tortugas atrapadas en redes de pesca o para que nuestros científicos y
equipo multimedia puedan realizar las maniobras de entrada y salida en el agua de manera
segura. Estudiar de cerca ballenas y delfines, recoger la basura marina y realizar estudios
oceanográficos, ¡entre otras muchas cosas!
El proyecto ahora depende de la captación de fondos suficientes para reemplazar la embarcación
en marzo, justo a tiempo para la temporada 2020, y poder seguir protegiendo especies en peligro
de extinción en el Mar Mediterráneo.

increible de voluntarios, científicos y educadores que trabajan sin descanso para proteger y

de la solución, no del problema. El equipo trata de involucrar a todo el mundo en el proceso de
conservación, no solo a los científicos. El barco une a investigadores, organizaciones, ciudadanos
y aquellos encargados de la toma de decisiones a bordo para trabajar juntos, de manera
colaborativa, en pro de una protección más efectiva de la vida marina silvestre.

Ich habe das Meer schon immer geliebt, und nachdem ich aus Australien nach Mallorca gezogen bin ist diese Liebe nur noch gewachsen. Mit 15 Jahren hatte ich die Möglichkeit meinen Sommer als Crew auf Toftevaag zu verbringen, ein altes norwegisches Segelboot das zur Meeresforschung eingesetzt wird. Nach nur einer Woche auf dem Schiff habe ich mich schon komplett in das Projekt verliebt. Ich habe jeden Tag wunderbare Menschen kennengelernt, und habe von Wissenschaftlern die seit ueber 30 Jahren im Mittelmeer forschen alle moeglichen Dinge ueber Delfine, Wale, Schildkroeten, Fische, Rochen, Quallen und Plastik erfahren. Ich war sofort gehooked! Die Leidenschaft mit der die Crew arbeitet um unser Mittelmeer zu retten, und das Wissen das es vieles gibt was unser Mitteleer bedroht, hat mich seitdem jedes Jahr wieder an Bord Toftevaag gebracht. Nun, 4 Jahre spaeter, bin ich Kapitän des Schiffs und meine Leidenschaft für meine Arbeit ist grösser als je zuvor. Aber das Projekt braucht deine Hilfe!!! Ich habe mich entschieden alles mögliche zu tun um diesem Projekt, Save The Med, zu helfen. Für die kommende Forschungs Saison wird dringend ein neues Zodiac (Beiboot) gebraucht. Wir brauchen es um mit den Tieren zu arbeiten, um in Plastik gefangene Schildkröten an Bord zu holen und befreien, um Tiere zu studieren ohne dass wir sie stören, um schwimmer ins Wasser und aus dem Wasser raus zu holen und als Sicherheit. Ich werde nun Spenden sammeln für dieses Beiboot um Save The Med zu unterstützen, und für jede Hilfe, ob klein oder groß, wäre ich sehr dankbar. Wenn du nicht spenden kannst dann bitte teile diesen Fundraiser, schicke ihn weiter und poste ihn auf Facebook! In ein paar Tagen setze ich Segel um den Atlantik von England bis in die Karibik zu überqueren, und werde spät Dezember wieder an Land sein.
