Hi I’m Nathan Tessmann
I’m a 26 year old Disabled man living on the sunshine coast, I am a fun loving, outgoing, funny, friendly and aspiring musician named MC Wheels. My condition is Spinal Muscular Atrophy with respiratory distress, which means my muscles are affected, this is degenerative muscle disorder that left me not being able to walk from the age of three and is getting worse as I age. I use a wheelchair or my signature skateboard to get around. Although I live independently I do rely on support workers assisting me with my daily needs /activities, to do this we utilise a van that has been modified to suit my particular needs. I’ve had this van for 19 years and its run its course, we have serviced it regularly and maintained it well but being a 1997 model I’m in dire need for an upgrade. Unfortunately I do not have the funds to buy my own new van. Under the NDIS I’m required to purchase my own vehicle and then they will modify it to my particular needs. My current van is a manual and limits my outings / parking options because of its height and which support people I can go with as not everyone that supports me can drive a manual. A newer automatic van would add much needed comfort and support to my life. To give you an idea of what I use the van for here are some, I play power chair football in Brisbane and use a specialised wheelchair that goes in the van. I play gigs from The Sunny Coast to Brisbane which I need to use my electric wheelchair and take a lot of gear. Getaways and holidays can be a struggle as the van can’t fit undercover which leaves me having to sacrifice comfort and independence and use the manual chair to get around. I have regular hospital appointments which leaves me waiting at drop off while the van gets parked far away this is not ideal as you could imagine. I’m looking to raise around $15,000 to then sell my current van and add that to be able to purchase a newer van, any amount you could give me would be immensely appreciated as I have no other options at this time, all donators will have a special place in my heart and I thank you for taking the time to read my story and helping me achieve this goal.
