Water Buffalo Farm
Twenty years ago, when I moved to the United States
I could not have imagined that one day I would be working with water buffaloes here in California, let alone doing so much with them. I grew up in the south of Italy, Naples, where there are many buffalo farms and I liked watching them bathing in their huge mud holes while riding with my family through the countryside.
But taming and training water buffaloes was far from what I wanted for myself.
Yet, three years ago I decided to take a totally different path in my life and I fell in Love with these beautiful and sweet animals.
So initially with only 6 buffaloes, I began to create an environment for them that would be relaxing and safe and make them feel good about giving me their milk. I was dreaming… But I did!
And then the first babies came and of course the Milk: pure white, naturally sweet and creamy!
I wanted to keep their milk pure, unaltered… So I could have it the way nature intended and so could my son and close friends.
Well, this year I would like to help many more people to have a taste of this fantastic milk and the great many products we can make with it.
I would like to create a place where adults and children can experience how beautiful it is to walk in nature among these sweet creatures;
I also want to give classes where everybody can learn how to milk them, and how to make cheese. Additionally, I’d like to hold classes for cooking with water buffalo cheese, and we can prepare big meals together to enjoy the fruits of our labors.
My wish is to share my dream with the whole community but I need the whole community’s help!!
I believe in this dream and firmly believe we all need this to happen!
I did things on my own for the last three years, but it is time for me to ask for help. The herd is bigger, and I need to build a new milking place for the beautiful moms that will be ready to calf in the spring of 2017. This will mean paying for construction, fencing, farming equipment, more refrigerator space and more help.
