Dear Friends and Supporters of new immigrant families in our community:
Greetings! It has been a while since we have written, but we would now love to share some updates and a new urgent request.
- In March, ReactDC paired us with a new family of eight who have been in the United States for two years, but have not previously had any support or community services. Our group committed to assist the family with job-related tasks such as job searches, resume building, and transportation to internships and interviews. We have helped with preparation for driver’s license learner’s permit tests. We are providing support in the application for community college classes and navigating the financial aid process. The family is hard working, but struggling to get by with one principal bread winner - the father, who, despite having a college degree, is driving long hours for Uber. We are assisting him in identifying training and certifications to allow him to pursue a career path in the finance sector.
- Two adult children have low-paying part time jobs, even while continuing to pursue educational goals. One of the adult daughters recently completed high school, has applied to community college, and works part time. She has been offered a new job in her chosen field (dental), but her ability to accept this job is dependent on transportation. Our group is assisting in the search for a used car so she can get from home to work to class, and which can also support the family’s other transportation needs. For this reason, we are launching a new urgent appeal to contribute funds to the purchase of a vehicle. The family has managed to save a small amount, but the primary goal of our fundraising is to supplement that amount so they are able to buy something safe and reliable. Our immediate goal is to raise $5000 to complement the amount the family has saved for a used car.
- We ask that you thoughtfully consider making a donation to our GoFundMe account to assist with the family’s transportation and other work and training needs.
