Neighbors for Speed Bumps

Dear Residents of the 3500 Block of Humboldt Ave. S. :
In 2019, we worked with Council President Lisa Bender’s office and the City Public Works Department to evaluate our options in providing traffic calming for our block. Our street, as you are aware, can be particularly dangerous because it is the preferred through street between East Bde Maka Ska Parkway and Hennepin Avenue. Cars are able to travel fast because of the lack of a stop sign at 35th and Humboldt. Furthermore, with the high point near the intersection of 35th and Humboldt, the sight lines are very poor for north-south traffic, and there have been many near misses and, sadly, last year a dog was struck and killed by a speeding car.
After evaluating several options (including a 4-way stop sign), the City decided that our ONLY option was the installation of speed bumps, provided we received enough signatures from the block. We submitted those signatures last year and just recently heard that our request has been approved. We are next in line for speed bumps and much-need traffic calming!
The next step is to fundraise for the speed bumps. The City is charging $7,500 for installation of the speed bumps, and we have elected to fundraise rather than request an assessment. We have 28 residences on the block, and if each residence contributed $268, we would be able to raise the money. That said, we know that, particularly given our new economic reality, not everyone will be interested in or able to contribute the full amount, so we anticipate we will need more than $268 from each contributing household.
The city is ready to move on this immediately and we are hoping to collect the total amount of money by June 1st, 2020.
Thank you!
