Need Support Finding Stable Housing After Lease Cancellation

My name is Michael, and I’m raising funds for my two roommates and I after an unexpected housing situation left us without stable housing and facing significant, unplanned expenses.

Includes below is the full story and a breakdown of some of the fees related to the move.

++++

We secured a Harlem apartment, signed our lease, provided guarantors, paid deposits, and made arrangements to move out of our existing apartments. Based on the approval we received, even after some delays, we made arrangements for movers and began packing and moving our belongings.

I planned to move from Bushwick and my roommates were already living in Harlem.

Unfortunately, after an extended delay in the application process and changes on the management side, our lease was ultimately canceled. We were left scrambling to find another place to live after we had already committed to movers, leaving us finding temporary storage and accommodations in the face of other expenses.

++++

We are now trying to secure new housing while managing costs that we would not have incurred if the original lease had been completed as expected.

As we were incurring fees, the broker told us they would seek reimbursement for part of the cost until our application was rejected.

Expenses We’re Facing

Bushwick Movers

* $495 — Original move
* $174 — Last minute Storage
* $250–$400: Additional move to a new apartment as a result of storage

Total: $919 — 1,069

Harlem Movers

* $262.50 — Mover cancellation fee
* $150–$300 — Last-minute mover charge

Total: $412.5 to $562.50

Other Expenses

* $260 — Overnight shipping and notary services for lease documents
* $125 — Temporary accommodation for four days
* $2,500 — One-month lease extension

Total: $2,855

Overall Lease Cancelation Related Expenses: $4,012.50 to $4486.5

Our immediate goal is to help curb some of these unexpected costs while we search for a new apartment and to get our belongings back together. We haven’t received our $3800 security deposit back either.

Any contribution, no matter the amount, would make a meaningful difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser with friends, family, or anyone who may be able to help would mean just as much to us.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for any support you can offer.
