Een blijvend extra eerbetoon aan bemanning A for Apple bij Castricum ?

Op 16 mei 2024 was bij de jaarlijkse herdenking van de crash van een Lancaster-bommenwerper in 1943 een indrukwekkend kunstwerk geplaatst op de strandopgang van Castricum. Dit sculptuur stelt de daadwerkelijke bemanningsleden van de bewuste RAF bommenwerper voor. Hoewel dit krachtige symbool slechts t.g.v. deze herdenkingsdag geplaatst was, ontstond al snel het idee om het een permanente plek te geven. Het kunstwerk is een onderdeel van het project “Standing With Giants” dat vanuit het Verenigd Koninkrijk in 2024 op veel plaatsen in West Europa de herinnering aan omgekomen Britse militairen zichtbaar maakte op plekken waar zwaar is gevochten, of, zoals in Castricum, waar een voltallige bemanning het leven liet.

Het idee voor deze plaatsing ontstond tijdens een bijeenkomst van de zogenaamde Dambusters Association in Engeland, waar de Noord Hollander Jan van Dalen, initiatiefnemer voor het monument in Castricum en erelid van deze Association vanwege zijn inzet voor de nagedachtenis van de omgekomen leden van het 617th Dambuster Squadron, het aanbod kreeg de bewuste silhouetten te kopen. Gezien de hoge kosten was dit helaas geen optie, maar in Engeland werd vervolgens wel getracht het kunstwerk dan maar tijdelijk te plaatsen, als extra eerbetoon tijdens de herdenking van de crash in 2024. Voor deze gelegenheid was ook een team van de RAF van de oorspronkelijke basis in Engeland op de fiets naar Castricum gekomen.

Het gemeentebestuur van Castricum ondersteunt nu een initiatief om dit indrukwekkende sculptuur alsnog een vaste plek te geven bij het al bestaande monument, en heeft inmiddels gesprekken gevoerd met betrokken partijen om dit mogelijk te maken. Er is brede steun voor het plan, maar er is nog een uitdaging: de financiering. Een deel van het benodigde bedrag is al toegezegd of gedekt door sponsoring van werkzaamheden, maar er is nog ongeveer €15.000 nodig om plaatsing definitief te realiseren. Dit bedrag is nodig voor het verkrijgen van de rechten, de technische bestanden voor het lasersnijden uit cortenstaal, en de productie en plaatsing van het sculptuur op de locatie. Omdat in het najaar van 2025 de strandopgang ingrijpend zal worden heringericht, is dit hèt moment om ook de plaatsing van het bestaande monument en deze silhouetten een passende plek te geven.

Het Comité 4 en 5 Mei Castricum steunt dit initiatief en roept Castricumse inwoners en ondernemers op om bij te dragen aan dit bijzondere project. A Permanent Extra Tribute to the Crew of "A for Apple" in Castricum?

On May 16, 2024, during the annual commemoration of the 1943 crash of a Lancaster bomber, an impressive artwork was placed at the Castricum beach entrance. This sculpture represents the actual crew members of the RAF bomber in question. Although this powerful symbol was only installed for the occasion of the memorial day, the idea soon arose to give it a permanent place. The artwork is part of the "Standing With Giants" project, which in 2024 brought the memory of fallen British servicemen to life at various locations across Western Europe—places where heavy fighting took place, or, as in Castricum, where an entire crew lost their lives.

The idea for this installation originated during a meeting of the so-called Dambusters Association in England, where Jan van Dalen from North Holland—initiator of the Castricum monument and honorary member of the Association for his dedication to remembering the fallen members of the 617th Dambuster Squadron—was offered the chance to purchase the silhouettes. Unfortunately, due to the high costs, this was not feasible. However, efforts were made in England to at least arrange a temporary installation of the artwork as an additional tribute during the 2024 commemoration. For this occasion, a team from the RAF’s original base in England even cycled all the way to Castricum.

The municipal government of Castricum is now supporting an initiative to give this impressive sculpture a permanent place at the existing monument. Discussions have already been held with involved parties to make this possible. There is broad support for the plan, but one challenge remains: the funding. Part of the required amount has already been pledged or covered through sponsorship of work, but approximately €15,000 is still needed to make the installation permanent. This amount is required to obtain the rights, technical files for laser-cutting the corten steel, and the production and placement of the sculpture at the location. Since the beach entrance is scheduled for major redevelopment in the fall of 2025, this is the perfect moment to also give the existing monument and these silhouettes a meaningful and lasting place.
