Hurricane Relief
Humanitarian Collection for Native (Indigenous) & Afrodescendants communities of the coast of Oaxaca, devastated by the Hurricane Erick
My Name is Sesi and I am helping Comedora Comunitaria and Trans Difusion to get some funds to support helping people affected by the Hurricane.
Oaxaca is one of the most exploited states in Mexico, most people earn around 15 euros a day (min. 8 hours) and life because of tourism & gentrification is getting extremely expensive (tbh living in Berlin and in Oaxaca most things cost the same). Therefore I am reaching out to you people in the global north to support this cause led by amazing, dedicated native queer folks.
Here you can read more about what has happened (written by Comedora Comunitaria Nkä'äymyujkëmë, translated by Sesi):
In the early hours of Thursday 19 June 2025, Hurricane Erick, a category 4 hurricane, hit the small coast of the territory of Oaxaca.
Several communities in the region of Pinotepa Nacional were left devastated, many families lost their homes, their work (since the main source of employment in the region is agricultural production, and the hurricane also took away their crops), and practically lost everything.
One of the communities is José María Morelos (an Afro-descendant community), which belongs to Pinotepa Nacional.
From the humanitarian work of the Comedora Comunitaria Nkä'äymyujkëmë, together with the colleagues of Trans-Difusión, we have organised collections of food supplies such as non-perishable food, personal hygiene articles, sheets, clothes, shoes, and packets of serum for hydration.
The first collection took place from 22 June to 5 July, and we went from the centre of Oaxaca to the coast on Sunday 6 July. As we shared the supplies, we witnessed the magnitude of the devastation left by the hurricane.
One of the most affected was María Colón, who was left without a home, without space to cook, eat and rest.
Mrs. Maria, her family and in general the people of the community, urgently asked us to bring them more food supplies:
Beans, rice, lentils, chickpeas, oil, salt, sugar, canned vegetables, cans of tuna, soybeans.
On Sunday August 3rd, we will go again to the community of José María Morelos Pinotepa, so we have 20 days to be able to collect enough food.
Our collection centre is located in the city of Oaxaca in the Comedora Comunitaria Nkä'äymyujkëmë, with address: 2ª privada de Brasil número 110-A, colonia América del Sur, Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca.
In order to transport all the supplies to the community, we make a 7-hour trip one way and another 7-hour trip back. So we need to pay for petrol, as well as for the toll booths, and we also need cash to be able to buy more supplies and food, so that the majority of the people or the whole community can receive this humanitarian support that they need as a priority.
We thank all the people who have the possibility of making a monetary donation, to be able to achieve this great mission that requires the support and solidarity of everyone.
Thank you very much.
