National Action Network: The Season of Giving

Join us today to support National Action Network’s (NAN) immediate Holiday efforts to communities across the country. We provide food, a Christmas toy drive, and support thousands of community members during the Holiday season. This year includes a multitude from migrant communities so we ask you to please donate and share our cause to support the many people in need over the Holidays.

NAN was founded in 1991 by Rev. Al Sharpton in the spirit and tradition of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to promote a modern-day civil rights agenda. For over three decades, NAN has been at the forefront of advocating for police and criminal justice reform, voting rights, fair housing, job opportunities, preserving vital social programs, reproductive rights, health care reform, LGBTQIA+ rights and so much more.

As we commemorate this Holiday season, a season of giving, NAN continues its mission of service to the community. On Thanksgiving Day, we distributed hot meals at our House of Justice headquarters in Harlem, as well as other NAN chapters in cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit, Sacramento, Cleveland and more, feeding thousands. The week prior, NAN NYC also provided free turkeys to the community, while NAN Atlanta chapters held two separate Thanksgiving food distribution events. Every year around Christmas, we organize both a toy drive and again provide hot meals at our headquarters in Harlem. At all of our Holiday events, everyone from elected officials to celebrities join us as we serve our communities and strengthen our bonds.

As NAN and our staff around the country close out 2023 and prepare for the new year ahead, we are asking for your support so that we may continue fighting for the voiceless, pushing for progress and empowering others. The Holidays serve as a prime opportunity to give back, so please join us in our efforts by donating to support our Christmas toy drive, food distribution and our work throughout the year for equality and justice. With over 100 chapters across the country, NAN is on the ground assisting communities, listening to their concerns, fighting on their behalf and working to uplift and empower them. Whether it’s standing with victims and impacted families of police brutality, serving food to a neighborhood suffering in the aftermath of a hate crime, holding gun buyback events, rallying against efforts to eliminate Black history in schools, fighting against voter suppression tactics, meeting with elected officials or pushing for corporate responsibility, NAN has an enduring footprint in every area of the nation.

When a deadly global pandemic hit New York City and quickly ravaged the country, NAN stepped up our efforts to assist the most vulnerable. In the midst of an unprecedented emergency, NAN partnered with World Central Kitchen to deliver 500 meals daily to those in need, ultimately giving away over 1,000,000 meals.

When George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, Rev. Sharpton called for immediate accountability, delivered a rousing eulogy and emphatically gave a clarion call to “get your knee off our necks”.

NAN led over 200,000 people in a demonstration at the March on Washington, demanding police reform and pushing for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

When a racist gunman opened fire at a Tops grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo, NY and killed 10 people, NAN mobilized on the ground instantly to support the community. Rev. Sharpton delivered several of the eulogies and NAN covered the funeral costs for all 10 victims. NAN also ensured that nutritious food was available to residents as the main grocery store was shut down in the aftermath of the horrific hate attack. Rev. Sharpton pushed for an increased focus on rising hate, and President Biden responded by hosting a summit to combat hate-fueled violence.

Through the years, NAN has hosted gun buyback programs, resulting in some 50,000 weapons being taken off the street and saving countless lives. Since its inception, NAN has fought for victims of police brutality and vigilante violence like Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, George Floyd, Duante Wright, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tyre Nichols and others. Rev. Sharpton and NAN continuously pushed for police reform, and under the Obama administration, the Justice Department initiated pattern-or-practice investigations into troubled police departments and secured consent decrees with several cities.
