Hi, my name is Philo. I was born in Australia but am originally Egyptian. At the age of seven, we moved to Arusha, a small town in Tanzania, because my dad got a job with the United Nations.
I attended an international school called UWC. My school did a lot of charity work for The Plaster House, a hospital that provides rehabilitative care for children with disabilities and burn injuries. Through these charity events, I had the opportunity to visit The Plaster House, play with the children, and help out in small ways.
One of the most memorable moments was when I won an artwork competition at my school. My winning piece was turned into a mosaic that is now displayed in one of the windows at The Plaster House. It was an incredible feeling to contribute something lasting to a place that helps so many children.
As a school, we also helped fund a safari trip for the kids at The Plaster House. Seeing their excitement as they got to experience Tanzania’s wildlife was unforgettable.
During this time, my family and I also traveled to Kenya for a Coptic mission trip. We spent time with children, attended church with them, and visited a hospital that provided care for those in need. It was a powerful experience that deepened my appreciation for helping others.
After three and a half years in Tanzania, we returned to Australia. I started school at St Declan’s Primary School, which was challenging at first, but I soon made friends who made the transition easier. Then, in high school, I moved to St Mary and St Mina Coptic Orthodox College. There, I reconnected with friends from church, and we are still close to this day.
I also attend St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, where I had the blessing of making Orban (holy bread) for the church. It was a special experience that deepened my connection to my faith and community.
I now play MMA and have been actively competing in tournaments. My next big goal is to raise $25,000 to go on a missionary trip to the Philippines with my school so we can help the people over there.
