Approximately 1 in 3 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. This year, 2 out of 3 of the Russiello siblings, my mum's brother and sister, were diagnosed with cancer. We all know the statistic, but it's so different when that statistic becomes real, affecting people you love.

My aunt was diagnosed by chance, having taken part in a research study for a diagnostic blood test for cancer; she didn't have any symptoms at the time. Investigations later revealed she had stage 3 ovarian cancer. Research studies like this can save lives, and we need more of it. That's why I'm raising money for Cancer Research UK, the world's largest independent cancer research organisation.

My aunt and uncle have both been incredibly positive since their diagnoses, continuing to do what they love throughout treatment, for as long as possible (for my aunt, that meant walking 4 miles a day, and for my uncle cycling and swimming!). Inspired by their love of movement (and my uncle's history of about many many marathons), I'm going to be running a marathon at the end of next month.

I decided to run the Venice marathon because Italy is where my family are originally from. In Italy, family is everything. I'm running for my aunt and uncle, but also for the rest of my family. Those that have previously to this year been diagnosed with cancer (my other Uncle and my Papa (grandad). Those that have supported them, including Mimi, my cousins, and extended family. I'm also running for all those other families also affected by cancer.
