I was accepted to work as a Pro Bono attorney with the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project. I have dedicated my legal career to helping those in need. I speak Spanish fluently and have worked with immigrant communities on critical employment and housing issues. I believe working on this extraordinary effort is a natural extension of my work.
About the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project
In December of 2014, the federal government opened the largest immigrant family detention center, the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas. In this detention center, known as baby jail, the government detains mothers and their children who have valid claims to asylum under US law. In 2015, the American Immigration Council, Catholic Immigration Network Inc. and America Immigration Lawyers Association began coordinating pro bono representation for the women and children detained in Dilley. Those efforts developed into the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project. The Pro Bono Project works to ensure that detained mothers and their children receive competent pro bono representation.
How does a Pro Bono Project Attorney Help?
Pro Bono attorneys represent women and children during credible fear interviews and bond proceedings. Pro Bono attorneys also provide administrative support to the project by completing client intakes and prep clients for interviews. Most importantly, Pro Bono attorneys work to protect women and their children from the harsh detention center conditions.
