Continuing Nick's (Chop's) Legacy
Donation protected
As you probably have heard, one of the best people ever, Nick Smith, passed away at only 36 years old from complications of end-stage renal disease. On December 5th, Nick went into sudden cardiac arrest at home. It took paramedics 25 minutes to get his heartbeat steady again. Unfortunately, his brain went too long without oxygen; he never regained consciousness and remained in a coma until his vitals declined, to the confirmation of brain death on December 10th. Nick left behind his beloved wife Trishia and teenage sons Jayden and Xander. In his final act of kindness and service to others, Nick was able to donate skin, bone, and eye tissue through Gift of Hope.
“Chop” as we lovingly knew him, was kind, caring, and incredibly funny. He would give you a place to sleep, feed you (a lot!), and make you laugh whenever he thought you were in need. Chop ADORED his wife and kids, his nieces, his friends, and doing right by animals and his community. He was very passionate about serving in nonprofit organizations and known for his dedication to organizing fundraisers, especially for children. He was a longtime volunteer with Jaycees, Shriners, Masons, and his sons’ schools, among other things. He was the guy who was there for everyone, every time, with a booming laugh and a giant hug to boot.
When Chop’s health declined, Trishia left her job to take care of him and their son Jayden, who has cerebral palsy. This is a family who spends so much time and energy supporting and helping others. They are always the first to jump in and never ask for anything in return.
Cari and I have been contacted by many people who knew Chop and were helped by him, asking how they can now help his family. The road ahead will be hard in the wake of this giant loss. We want to show Trish and the boys the same love and compassion they and Chop always pour onto others and continue Chop’s legacy. Every little bit can help with significant medical expenses, funeral costs, and future needs for the boys.
