Help my student’s family get on their feet

Hi, my name is Georgie and I’m a proud public school educator. In December, I received a new student in my first grade class. J, who’s family had recently immigrated from Central America, was 6 years old, spoke only Spanish, and had never been to school. During his first two weeks, he followed me everywhere I went during the school day, while I tried communicating the best I could with my horrible Spanish. The other students were kind and understanding, including him in their games and watching out for him, but I can’t imagine how overwhelmed he must have felt each day.

While J is still adjusting, he can now communicate more easily with me and his peers, has made new friends, and with the help of our reading teacher, knows all of his letters, letter sounds and has begun blending them to make words. He is such a sweet, bright, and hard working kid!

J’s mom recently received her work permit and is looking for a job, but confided that she spent everything she had to get herself and her children to the US and they are two months behind on rent. It is imperative that J’s daily life stay as predictable as possible to ensure continued academic and social success.

I am hoping to raise $5000, an amount that would cover back rent as well as the next 2 months rent while J’s mother looks for work. J and his family have already sacrificed so much to get here and I’d hate for them to lose the home and community they’ve begun to build.

Thank you for considering!
