Meet My Mom – A Woman You Won’t Forget
If you’ve ever met my mom, chances are you remember her. Maybe it was her big laugh or her even bigger personality. She’s always been the kind of woman who lights up a room — funny, a little crazy in the best way, and endlessly outgoing. Whether you knew her for years or just five minutes, she made an impression. That’s just who she is.
Earlier this year, my mom was diagnosed with dementia. Since then, her condition has progressed faster than any of us expected. It’s been heartbreaking to watch such a vibrant, energetic spirit become confused, forgetful, and at times fearful. As her sole caretaker, I’ve done everything I can to make her comfortable, keep her safe, and hold onto the pieces of who she’s always been. But I’ve come to a difficult, emotional crossroads.
Caring for someone you love isn’t just physically exhausting — it weighs heavily on your heart, your mind, and your relationships. I’ve been wearing a lot of hats lately: nurse, cook, personal assistant, night-shift security, emotional support, and full-time referee (dementia has its moods). And while I like to think I wear them well, I’m just one person — and even the best hat rack eventually tips over.
My mom has become homebound as I’ve juggled everything to keep her cared for. But recently, her wandering has become dangerous, and I can no longer guarantee her safety at home. I’m reaching out for help — emotionally and financially — to transition her into a memory care home where she can get the professional, around-the-clock care she now needs.
This isn’t easy for me to write. I love my mom. This decision from a place of love — and the realization that she deserves more than I can give on my own.
If you’re able to support or even just share our story, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This journey is tough, but with a little help, I know I can give my mom the care and dignity she deserves in this next chapter.
