I’m currently in my third year of training to become a midwife here in the UK as a mature student, a journey I chose not just as a career but as something I feel truly passionate about. Being with women, supporting them and caring for families during one of the most powerful and vulnerable moments of their lives is something I will never take for granted. It’s a privilege that fills me with purpose every single day, and I know it’s something I will forever be grateful to be part of.
This journey hasn’t been easy. To begin my training I had to put my life of hold, give up my income to have time to study and throughout my training, I will complete over 2,300 hours of unpaid clinical placement alongside demanding academic studies. It’s intense, emotional and at times overwhelming but it’s also incredibly rewarding and it constantly reminds me why I started.
As I enter my final year, I have to complete an elective placement as part of my degree. I have applied and have been lucky enough to be given an amazing opportunity to carry out an elective placement in Mauritius in August 2026. This experience will allow me to witness midwifery care in a completely different healthcare system, opening my eyes to new perspectives and approaches. I truly believe it will shape me not just as a student midwife but as the kind of compassionate, knowledgeable professional I aspire to become.
In Mauritius we will be working across 2 weeks supporting women clinically across antenatal, labour and postpartum settings. Alongside this we will be working with student midwives in Mauritius supporting each other to understand cultural perspective and practice. In Mauritius they also have leading rates for breast feeding and I hope to be able to engage in there education and support pathways to deepen my knowledge to help support women in the UK upon my return.
However, when applying for this opportunity the travel and accomodation costs were initially covered. Due to unforeseen circumstances globally these costs have now vastly increased and now come with a significant increase, including travel, accommodation, and living expenses. I’m reaching out to ask for your support in helping me make this dream possible.
Every single contribution, no matter how small, brings me one step closer to gaining this life changing experience and continuing my journey to becoming a qualified midwife.
I want this fundraiser not just about furthering my own clinical and emotional skills but to give back too. That’s why 10% of all funds raised will be donated to the Ipswich Baby Bereavement Group, a charity that supports families during some of the most heartbreaking and vulnerable times of their lives.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story, for your kindness, and for supporting me in a career dedicated to empowering women and caring for our next generation.
