Hi everyone! My name is Lucy and I'm currently a third year student midwife at University of Plymouth, and in August 2026 - after i finish my last year of university and before i start working as a qualified midwife - I have the incredible opportunity to complete a two week midwifery placement, followed by one week volunteering at a childcare and women empowerment program in Tanzania, East Africa! This is more than just a placement to me - those who know me know that doing midwifery abroad has been a dream of mine since as long as I can remember. It's a chance to make a real difference in maternal healthcare while learning from midwives in a completely different culture and setting.

In Tanzania, maternity services face immense challengers: overcrowded wards, a lack of resources and a huge shortage of basic supplies mean midwives are working under extreme pressure to provide the best possible care. While Tanzania does have a strong focus of maternal and neonatal health - the healthcare system operates with much fewer resources compared to the UK.

I feel so privileged to be entering a profession dedicated to empowering and supporting women through on of the most important moments of their lives. This placement will allow me to bring my passion, skills, and compassion to a setting there i hope to make a meaningful impact and grow into the midwife i aspire to be.

How YOU could help....
As a full-time healthcare student who has to complete 2500 hours of unpaid clinical experience, trying to balance part time work alongside my studies is incredibly difficult. I'm doing all i can to fund this opportunity with the what I can by working part time on my days off - but to make this dream a reality, I need all the support I can get!

Here's an outline of the costs:
  • Placement Fee (The Mighty Roar) + Indemnity Insurance = £1600
  • Flights & Travel insurance & VISA = £1550
  • Vaccinations and Health Prep = £500

❗️❗️TOTAL = £3650 ❗️❗️

I understand that times are tough for many, but if you feel you can support me by sharing this page or by providing a donation, even just a few pounds. Every share and every donation will bring me closer to me dream and a once in a lifetime opportunity - i would be so incredibly grateful!

You're kindness won't just help me - it will support mothers, babies and midwives in Tanzania who live and work with so little resources.

As a thank you for this opportunity and a way to give back alongside my volunteering, I am hoping to donate essential resources to the hospital including: sterile dressings, gloves and maternity pads etc.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and be a part of this journey. Your support means the world to me.

**If, for any reason, I am unable to undertake this placement, I will ensure that all donations are either used to purchase and transport essential supplies to the communities in needs
