My name is Michelle and on 6th May this year we was given the news from the doctors at the hospital 'that there was nothing more they could do for my Dad and they were fast tracking him out of hospital into a nursing home'

In March 2024 my dad was rushed to hospital struggling to breathe with SATS of 69% oxygen. At this stage he had pneumonia, a collapsed lung and heart failure aswell as being in earlier stages of COPD. After a few weeks he was discharged on a small amount of oxygen but sadly over time he experienced further hospital admissions and each one he was discharged on more oxygen than previously.

He is currently on a minimum of 10litres of oxygen 24/7 and this can be increased up to 15litres.

The doctors obviously can't predict a timescale on when he will pass but he has opted for DNR and when the time comes he's already been prescribed medication to make his passing peaceful.

As November is COPD awareness month my wish is to raise funds for the nursing home that will be looking after my Dad for the remainder of his life.

As one of the biggest complications of COPD is struggling to breathe I will be pushing myself (obviously in a safe way) to reach that feeling, asthmatic myself and also have Fibromyalgia and endometriosis but I plan to jog/brisk walk for 20 minutes everyday though out November (this will be on top of my minimum of 10000 steps per day) and on one day in November (yet to be decided) I will be doing the Ice Bucket Challenge and whilst this challenge isn't directly linked to COPD given the weather it will leave me cold and breathless.

I'm aiming to raise funds for Brookfields Nursing Home in Littleover Derby to say thankyou for taking such good care of my Dad. The funds raised will either go towards something to benefit the residents or I've said to the staff they can use the money to treat themselves as they truly deserve recognition and thanks.
