Lucy is a hardworking and self-sufficient homesteader in the southern part of Northern Ontario, with 100 acres of land, livestock, and permaculture gardens; land that will eventually be passed down to her and her husband's children and grandchildren. A devastating incident occurred in the winter of 2020, when their cabin burnt to the ground, and they lost all of the contents that were inside, including important family heirlooms, documentation, and photos.

It took a while, but Lucy and her family were able to slowly rebuild, and began with a small cabin, and eventually an addition for the quaint and simple little home for her, her husband, and their dog 'Terminator'.

Their son, also residing on the large acreage, lives next door with his small family, and his profession involves scrap metal, construction, deconstruction, property clean-ups, etc.

After the fire occurrence in 2020, they were to be issued a permit to have the burnt cabin removed (by the local building inspector). The permit, was never issued until recently, in late July of 2025. To accompany that permit, several notifications were given to Lucy and her family, that both of the cabins (hers and her son's) were to be demolished, and all of the trailers on the property were to be removed (which exceeds 10). The township only allows for one cabin to exist (with their by-law standards), and one trailer to be on the entire 100 acres. As of August 1st, they have now just over one week left to have all of this work to be completed. Yes, this means major crunch-time!

This now poses additional questions, as well as huge costs. Where will the 2 families stay? Will they become homeless, will they need to live in tents, or need to seek residency with other family members or friends? How much will the new cabin permit be?

Well, we certainly hope that we can help raise some money for the following costs that will be incurred:

  • Cost for demolition and removal of cabins
  • Cost for removal of trailers
  • Cost for a poured concrete slab (which will be the platform for an older RV trailer that Lucy and her husband will stay in until a new cabin is built)
  • Cost to have septic & hydro relocated
  • Cost for an Open Build Permit for a new cabin ($295/square foot)
  • Cost for the Foundation build
  • Cost for a cabin (including materials that they cannot salvage from the other cabins, labourers, blueprints (multiple copies), etc).

In addition to just a monetary fundraiser, a bunch of us in the homesteading/prepping community are teaming up to gather auctionable items that can be sold in an ongoing online auction, and the funds will be contributed to the My Crooked Little Homestead Rebuild. This auction is being held on Facebook (as it provides a free platform), as opposed to paid online auction sites.

Any contributions, be it monetary, or auctionable items are much appreciated from anyone. Large or small contributions, they all add up. The goal is to have a cabin large enough for Lucy, her husband and her son's family completed before the snow arrives this winter.

You can run a playlist from the My Crooked Little Homestead YouTube channel to boost Lucy's watch hours for monetization. My Crooked Little Homestead YouTube Channel

Yes, this is achievable! 100% They already have great people by their side, assisting with demolitions and removal.

Thank you for your time, and any contributions you may decide to make.

Kind Regards,
The My Crooked Little Homestead Care Team
