My name is Rodney Blu, and I am a devoted and doting dad, an aspiring children's book author, and I've never met a dog or a baby that didn't like me. Storytelling has always been a central component in my life and endeavors, expressed through as many mediums as you can imagine: thoughtful journalism, dramatic shorts, impassioned essays, whimsical poems, and silly little doodles. Becoming a father rekindled my passion for the joys of childhood and inspired me to take the advice of my late grandmothers and create my first children's book—born from the love, curiosity, and adventures of my son.

I am excited to present ROY THE BOY STARS IN: A TIME TO PLAY AND A TIME TO STAY, a heartwarming and lively picture book that captures the boundless energy and joy of childhood. This story, aimed at children aged 3 to 10, follows the adventures of four-year-old Roy, a spirited boy who loves to play from dawn 'til dusk.

Roy's days are filled with delightful activities: splashing in puddles, racing his toy car, swinging high, and playing hide and seek. His parents, Baba and Mami, sometimes pause his fun with reminders of necessary routines—meals, baths, and preparations for the day. Initially, Roy resents these interruptions, yearning for playtime unburdened by "times to stay."

However, through a day of adventure and hyperactivity and a comforting evening with his parents, Roy learns a valuable lesson about balance. Mami and Baba gently explain that these "times to stay" are essential for his well-being, making "times to play" even more enjoyable.

ROY THE BOY STARS IN: A TIME TO PLAY AND A TIME TO STAY not only entertains with its vivid depiction of a child's playful imagination but also imparts an important message about balancing fun and responsibilities. The story emphasizes the nurturing role of parents in guiding their children to understand this balance, making it relatable for both kids and parents.

I believe Roy the Boy has the potential to resonate deeply with young readers and their families, offering a joyful and meaningful addition to the world of children's literature.

In a time when children's media and society at large are finally openly embracing diverse identities, there remains a significant gap in the representation of Black boys. While historically marginalized demographics are having their moment in the sun, young Black boys lack a consistent, relatable protagonist in mainstream media, with Cartoon Network's "Craig of the Creek" being a rare, masterfully executed exception.

"Roy The Boy Stars In..." is poised to fill this void.

Meet Roy, a smart, creative, and endlessly optimistic young boy, the beloved only child of his parents.

Roy navigates the world through learning, imagination, and adventure, offering a fresh, engaging narrative that encourages Black boys to see themselves as capable, curious, and a critical component of the children's media landscape.

This series aims to provide young Black boys with a character they can identify with, fostering a sense of pride and joy in their identity. Roy's adventures are designed to celebrate childhood and nurture inquisitiveness, free from the heavy burdens of social inequalities.

"Roy The Boy Stars In..." is not just a series; it's a movement to inspire a new generation of Black boys—and all children—to enjoy their youth and dream big.

Currently, the only thing in the way of bringing this incredible story, and the countless other adventures starring Roy The Boy to life, is a proper illustrator. I began this endeavor with the goal of playing the role of both author and illustrator. But as a creative who has had to choose and define their specialties many times in my life, I recognize my limitations as an artist and would like to employ the skillset of a visual artist I truly admire.

I have long admired and respected the work of Daniel Dyemond, a fellow Dallas-native, illustrator, skateboarder, zine maker, and all-around badass. His characters have heart, charm, and style—while also possessing a spirit of individuality, resistance to conformity, and radical social consciousness.

Even before inquiring about his contributions to Roy The Boy, Daniel has been supportive, encouraging, and a willing and enthusiastic mentor, offering insight, critique, and advice without ever being too critical or heavy-handed.

Daniel was kind enough to quote me his rate and although extremely reasonable for the amount of work it requires, the total price is outside my budget. I'm hoping that my friends, family, and community will see the value, effort, and intention of this project and support Daniel and myself in bringing this vision to fruition.
