My job as Russell's caregiver

Donation protected

You may already know that my brother Russell has been a dialysis patient for five years. You may also know that on October 28th, the day we had waited for finally came: he got a kidney donor! His transplant surgery was a success, and he needs a dedicated caregiver during his recovery. I committed to that role in 2020 when he first got accepted on a transplant list. I have now stepped into my new role - wow. Together we decided I was the best candidate as 1) I am his closest kin, 2) I've been involved since the beginning of his health crisis, 3) and I am very excited to help him move forward to healthy independence. I have helped him through the years, traveling to NJ a week or two at a time, as my life in NC would allow. As I assume the role of his full-time caregiver, I'm prepared for at least three months as he recovers and adjusts to a new kidney. I couldn't be happier to be the one to fill this critical position! However, it is not a paid position.
As I put gainful employment aside, the bills will keep coming in (of course!), and we will have to eat. I have to consider gas, car care and other basic needs. And what if I need a haircut? I've become accustomed to living somewhat meagerly, partly because I have chosen a lifestyle allowing flexibility to travel to NJ. Because of this, my financial needs are not outrageous. You may know I've been weaving wheat (straw art), which helps to make ends meet. I've also just barely begun a new career in real estate. While I will try to keep my hand in both, these two ventures will need to take a back seat while I'm in NJ. It feels wrong to pressure myself to work in my usual way during this important time for Russell.
Many of you have followed Russell and me during the last five years. We have felt so supported by all the encouragement offered by friends and family. I am new to crowd-funding, but since this job involves a lot of time and energy without compensation, I began to explore the idea. If you feel moved to help float me through this, either in a monthly donation for three months or in a one-time sum, it will relieve a great deal of stress for both of us. Thank you for any consideration that feels right for you.
Love,
Katherine
