Help My Brother Get Life-Saving Aortic Valve Repair Surgery

Hi everyone,

I, Sumina Lama reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your help. My brother (Sunil Lama), who is just 33 years old, is in urgent need of open-heart surgery (aortic valve repair)—a procedure that could save his life.

My brother came to Emergency (Sunshine Hospital) on 04/04/2025 and was admitted to Cardiology ward immediately then transferred to ICU the next day. Now he is in ICU and the doctors have said he needs to have a surgery which will happen in Alfred Hospital. Therefore, we are awaiting the bed to be available in Alfred Hospital since 07/04/2025.

I recently had a baby and live in Hobart. My parents were here to spend time with my daughter. But, because of my brother’s health issues, me and my dad came to Melbourne and has been living here since then. My 3 months old baby is in Hobart with my mother and husband. Unfortunately, my brother has no health insurance and no savings which made it more difficult.

Right now, he's fighting through multiple serious health complications. On top of his heart condition, he’s currently being treated for pneumonia, a blood clot in his lungs, and fluid overload. It’s been an incredibly overwhelming and emotional time for our family, watching someone we love to go through so much all at once.

The doctors have made it clear: surgery is the next critical step in his care. But with everything going on, the medical bills are piling up quickly. Hospital stays, testing, medications, and ongoing treatment are already adding financial stress to an already heartbreaking situation.

We’re trying to raise funds to help cover:

• The cost of aortic valve repair surgery

• Ongoing hospital and ICU care

• Medications and recovery support

• Travel and basic living expenses during recovery

At this stage, I do not know about the total cost for the surgery. I have been informed that once he is transferred to the Alfred Hospital, I will be notified about the surgery costs.
