My Brother, a Victim of the Devastating Maui Fire

On August 8th, 2023 wild fires descended on Maui. My brother John is a 20-year resident of the island he loves and calls home. John is a simple man with not a lot of material possessions. That has never been his goal in life. He cares deeply about his family, friends and neighbors. As the fires descended and everybody else ran and evacuated, John decided to stay and fight. He had no vested interest in the apartments he lived in, he wasn't the owner. His only interest was saving his neighbor's homes. He could have packed all his possessions in a bag and left with everybody else, but that's not him. He grabbed a garden hose and climbed up on the rooftop. For the next 3 hours, he fought the flames and smoke. I believe he thought he could save the building. But the smoke and heat were just too much. In the last moment, he jumped off the roof and dashed to the ocean. With the heat and flames at his back, he dove in. We filled out a missing persons report with the Maui PD because we couldn't find or contact him. They found him the next day at 2a
m exhausted sleeping on the beach. His only possessions were the clothes on his back, a cell phone (no charger) and his knife. He's refusing to leave the island as of this writing. We want him to come back to the Mainland to see him. In my eyes, he did a Heroic thing. But he's going to need help to rebuild his life. The pictures and artifacts he had can never be replaced. We are lucky he's still alive. I'm asking for your help. Any donation, small or large will help him find a new shelter for the time being and get him back on track to helping the community. He's been interviewed by David Ono on ABC. His interview has been replayed on CNN and Good Morning America. I've never seen my brother cry or get emotional. But he loves Maui, it's hard for him to let go. But with all your help, I'm sure he'll be back. Maui Strong! Ohana ❤️.
