Ladie & Liddle Kidz® Foundation | A Work of Heart

Tax deductible
Dear Friends, Colleagues and Family,

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm to announce, I have been chosen as an international global ambassador to participate in the sustainable Liddle Kidz® International Therapeutic Exchange Program (iTEP). This is a huge honor, as over 4,200 people applied for the 30 volunteer spots on the Liddle Kidz Foundation team going to the Philippines. As Registered Massage Therapist, birth worker and Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist, it will be my greatest honour and privilege to serve the Filipino children and family with nurturing, therapeutic touch.

A little bit about the global outreach program: The team, made up of massage therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, child life specialists and other healthcare professionals, will be in the Philippines for three weeks, starting in December 2019. We will be working in numerous areas of the country, at hospitals, orphanages, and care centers, providing pediatric massage and touch therapy to the children there. We will also be training the children's caregivers and healthcare staff in massage/touch therapy techniques, so that the therapy can continue long after we return home.

A little bit about me and why this program is significant to my life and career

As many of you know, I grew up in the streets of Manila, my family are not the wealthiest and we just have to scrape by on what we can earn. When I was younger I experienced to sell food on the streets, while my younger siblings pick up metal scraps and junk to sell so we can have money for school projects and other needs while my parents earn their living to put food on the table. I am often part of scholarship, feeding and different medical programs that are organized by local government, church groups and non-profit organizations like Liddle Kidz. My mom eventually landed a job in Canada and was given an opportunity to sponsor us and provide us a better life.  Since I moved here, it has always been my goal to go back and give back.

My chosen profession and Liddle kidz plays a big role with things coming into full circle. You see in the Philippines, because of poverty if one of the family members gets sick, we tend to bring them to “quack doctors”. “Quack doctors” in our culture are what we believed to be “natural healers” such as albularyo (supernatural healer/ exorcist), manghihilot (masseuse) and faith healers. These practitioners often treat the underprivileged without having formal education with their craft. Now, with my awareness and education, I have come to realize that some of their practices are harmful and can be detrimental to people and most specially the children’s health. It is unfortunate and sad that because of lack of knowledge and means that the family can only bring their loved ones to these “doctors” to get treatment. And this is what we ought to bring to these communities- Evidenced based practices and education.

Why Liddle Kidz Foundation’s Global Outreach is Vital?

As adults (living in first world country), many of us are familiar with the incredible benefits of massage and therapeutic touch. Research indicates the benefit of pediatric massage and nurturing touch is important to a child’s development. Additionally, without touch children often feel discarded, forgotten and even untouchable, this is exaggerated when a child’s circumstances is complicated by illness or disability. When Children are living in an institutional setting such as an orphanage, their physical needs such as food, shelter and clothing are immediate. However their emotional needs and personalized attention are neglected. Experience has shown that orphanages, and care settings, find it find it difficult to meet the emotional and developmental needs of children, including personalized care and attention. Our team will strive hard to help each other feel valued.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this. Now… In order to take part in this global outreach program, I’ve got some fundraising to do.
