Nauru Refugees: COVID-19 Fund for Single Mum

Donation protected
Nu is a single mother of four daughters, the head of a refugee family recently resettled from Nauru to the United States -- in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, the family is struggling to get by.

Nu worked in a local car factory, but has since been made redundant and doesn't have easy access to unemployment benefits. All four girls had been enjoying a new start at school, after missing out on schooling during their time on Nauru

Like so many Nauru refugee families making their way in the US, their lives have been thrown into limbo.

The Australian-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this emergency GoFundMe for Nu in the United States. Donations will be processed in USD and it is has been linked directly to her account.

If you can, please chip in now to help give them a fair go, so they can cover rent, food and so that Nu can continue to provide for her four young children >>

The Myint family are among more than a dozen Nauru refugee families who were in the early stages of rebuilding their lives in the USA when the COVID-19 crisis hit.

Chesa (19) is in Grade 11 and says she is looking forward to graduation next year. She would like to become a doctor but also enjoys art, particularly painting and fashion design. Her younger sisters are all equally as ambitious and have spent a lot of time thinking about what they would like to be once they complete school.

Chit (17) is in Grade 10 and hopes to become a lawyer. Gawa (14) likes to read a variety of books and is uncertain as to what she would like to do at this stage. Khin (9) can’t decide whether she would like to be a police officer or a teacher.

Seven years ago, the family fled targeted violence from their home country. Days before they finally made it to Australia, the government instituted a sudden change to the refugee policy, meaning they were sent to offshore immigration detention rather than resettled, like those who arrived just days earlier.

The family spent six years stranded on Nauru in conditions condemned by the UN and Amnesty International before being resettled in the USA.  After finally getting their lives back on track, the COVID-19 crisis has thrown the family into limbo, with Mum now out of work.

Please chip in if you can help out, it will be sent directly to the family’s account the next day >>

Chesa said although they cannot go to the arcade to play laser tag and go bowling like they would like, the family have been busy planting lilies, roses and vegetables in their garden.

They have never had the opportunity to grow plants before and each morning she and her younger sisters wake up eager to see the progress.

Like many parents across the globe Mum is doing her best to keep her children engaged and schooled from home. Chesa told us they are sad they may not be able to do any of the fun things we had planned for Summer, but are glad to be able to spend more time with Mum. "We are so grateful for any help from the community during this difficult time," she told us.

Please chip in to help out if you can, and share this fundraiser to raise awareness >>
