This Week's Spotlight: Pakistan Floods Crisis Response

THE CAUSE

Over 1000 are dead. The monsoons that have been ravaging Pakistan since June have permanently changed millions of lives for the worse. Since the start of the monsoon season, Pakistan has received 60% of its total average monsoon rainfall in just three weeks. Heavy rains have caused urban and flash floods, landslides, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) throughout Pakistan, most notably in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh.

Above-normal precipitation was predicted over most parts of the country during the forecast season. Heavy rains were reported in July 2022 in significant parts of Balochistan. Due to this, Jhal Magsi, Khuzdar, Pishin, Lasbela, Naushki, Killa Abdullah, Killa Saifullah, and Naseerabad were the worst affected.

Recent rains in Sindh have resulted in flush floods and affected most districts. As per reports, people have suffered heavy losses, including loss of human lives, livestock, and agriculture, that’s why the government of Sindh has declared Kamber Shahdadkot, Matiari, Dadu, Badin, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Naushahro Fero, and Khairpur as Calamity affected districts.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), as of August 3rd, 529 people have died due to the floods, including 108 women and 191 children, while 604 others had been injured.

As per the NDMA report, More than 40,000 households have been affected due to Rains or flash floods. More than 32000 houses have been partially damaged and another 8146 homes have been fully damaged. In addition,60 bridges and 2445.5 km of road sections have been affected, while about 24,000 livestock have been lost.

Paani started as a nonprofit dedicated to giving back to those from disenfranchised communities in Pakistan, it has now shifted into a movement. A movement that hopes to inspire others to invest their time and resources into creating a better future. Paani aims to ingrain this responsibility of community service in children of diaspora. We all can work today for a better tomorrow. Through grassroots efforts, Paani has grown into a 501(c)(3) non-profit, working closely with student volunteers, both in the United States and abroad to facilitate real, tangible change in Pakistan. The beauty of this project is that our story has only begun. With your help, we can continue to grow and work toward a better future for Pakistan.
