The Cambodian community has been a vital part of Southeast Seattle for decades — bringing rich traditions, hard work, and resilience that have helped shape the neighborhood’s character. From family-run businesses to community leadership, the Khmer community’s contributions have left a lasting mark on Rainier Beach.
We now have the chance to honor that legacy with something beautiful and lasting: a large public mural celebrating the Khmer community in Southeast Seattle. The mural will be installed at King Donuts — a beloved, locally owned business run by Cambodian refugees whose hospitality and dedication have made it a cornerstone of Rainier Beach.
About the Mural
The mural will be created by local artists Lauren Iida and Nak Bou, both with deep ties to the Khmer community. Community members will be invited to share ideas, artwork, and personal stories, which will be woven into a vibrant, comprehensive design reflecting the history, culture, and contributions of Cambodian residents.
Why It Matters
This mural will be more than art on a wall. It will:
- Honor the journey and resilience of Cambodian refugees in Seattle
- Celebrate the cultural richness of the Khmer community
- Bring neighbors together in a shared creative process
- Add beauty and vibrancy to a space we all love
- Inspire youth with a positive, welcoming message
How You Can Help:
Donate to the mural project! Costs include:
- Artist fees for design and creation
- Supplies and materials
- Community engagement sessions to collect ideas and stories
- Preparation and preservation of the wall so the mural lasts for years to come
