Hi! Whether you clicked this link because of curiosity or cuteness- thank you!
So on top of everything else our baby girl faces, it turns out she has mild plagiocephaly and severe brachycephaly. These refer to the shape of her head, with brachycephaly being an extreme flatness in the back, and the plagiocephaly being an asymmetric slant on the back of her head. This is most likely due to her sleeping on her back since birth as well as her hypotonia that has extremely limited her mobility.
While brachycephaly limits mobility, if plagiocephaly is left untreated, children are at risk for developmental, neurological or psychological difficulties.
We are hoping to get these issues corrected sooner, rather than later, so that Harper doesn’t have any more physical or mental hurdles to get over than she already does. Unfortunately, our insurance will not cover a helmet unless it is needed after corrective surgery for craniosynostosis. Nevertheless, our doctors say this will greatly improve her physical mobility and while not necessary, yet, it is strongly encouraged. The doctor and physical therapist recommend the helmet be prescribed prior to the child reaching 8 months old due to growth rates and the way the bones that shape the head form. Because insurance does not cover the cost, Hanger clinic charges 1500 for out of pocket payment. With 50% being due upfront.
We are constantly being asked if there is anything anyone can do to help. We get blankets, outfits, gift cards- but we created this page because a $5 donation toward her helmet would be a huge help and blessing, and it’s something Harper needs and is not just a feel-good item (even though we appreciate those too!) Please don’t feel obligated to donate, we will be getting Harper a helmet either way, but every little bit helps, and people always ask how they can help!
