Hello! My name is Lina Nguyen. (Pronoun: she, her, hers) I am 27 years old,  Asian American,  a college student at Salt Lake Community College and will be graduating this May with my Associates in Communication. When I was 16 years old, I was involved in a car accident that left me paralyzed from the chest down. I sustained a spinal cord injury level C4 which means I am a quadriplegic. Therefore I have to use an electric wheelchair to get around everywhere due to minimal mobility. It’s been 10 years now since that day. Being a victim of this tragic incident changed my whole life. Since my accident, I have learned so much about how to live life with my disability. Yes, I have a disability; doesn’t mean I lack ability. I still do normal things like everyone else. I just do things in a different way that helps accommodate my life.

My aspiration in life is to be a mentor in our community. To show others to embrace their disability as a superpower and showcase it as what makes them unique.  Also, know this may be an uphill battle but as long as we keep rolling no one will be able to knock us down. So with that, I am honored to represent Utah and my community as Ms. Wheelchair Utah 2020. I hope to share with everyone my stories from Tragedies to Triumphs. Anything and everything that is relevant to life as a quadriplegic.

As Ms. Wheelchair Utah 2020, I will be representing the State of Utah in the upcoming National Ms. Wheelchair America competition happening on August 17-23, 2020.
I'm raising money for the entry fee of the competition, my journey to nationals, and advocating throughout Utah.

Throughout the year as Ms. Wheelchair Utah 2020, I plan to share my platform, “Support Inclusivity: Spreading awareness about the value of support groups and peer mentors for people with disabilities.” With this platform,  I plan to educate others about the positive impact that support groups and peer mentors can have for people with all different types of abilities. I believe that these support systems create a better lifestyle for people in the disability community, allowing them to come together, learn, and support each other through their trials and successes. Ultimately, I want people to know that they are not alone when they experience challenges or acquire a new disability. Together, we truly are stronger.

Here’s why I need your help: During my 2020 reign, I’ll be traveling throughout the state to visit places such as hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, schools and many other places to talk about my platform and discuss awareness, acceptance and the overall understanding of disabilities with the general public. In addition, I’ll be competing in the National competition in Little Rock, Arkansas this summer. The entry fee for that is $2000, which covers my hotel, meals, activities. Therefore, I can use all the help I can get through donations, shares on social media, and sponsorships.

Thank you for all of your love and support. Your help with anything is greatly appreciated.

Yours truly,

Lina Nguyen
